How password strength is calculated
The checker scores your password from 0 to 100 based on length, character variety (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols) and penalties for weak patterns — including common leaked passwords, keyboard walks like qwerty, repeated characters and simple numeric-only strings. It also estimates entropy in bits, which drives the crack-time calculation.
What is a strong password?
Security experts recommend passwords of at least 12 characters that combine multiple character types and avoid predictable words or patterns. Better still, use a long passphrase of random words — length beats complexity when it comes to resisting brute-force attacks. Most importantly, use a unique password for every site; a password manager makes that practical.
